  2. Pick how to write it: Words, Check amount (with the cents over 100), Money (dollars and cents) or Ordinal (first, second, third).
  3. Change the capitals under Options if you need every word capitalized or all capitals.

How it works

Type a number in digits and the tool spells it out in American English. Put each number on its own line to convert a list; blank lines stay blank, and a line that isn’t a number is left as it is.

It reads the usual ways of writing numbers: 1234.56, 1,234.56, $1,234.56, 1 234 567, -40, 21st, and the European 1.234,56. It spells out up to 36 digits (decillions) and 20 decimal places, and keeps every digit exact.

The words follow American usage:

  • Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine get a hyphen: forty-two.
  • No “and” inside the number (one hundred five), except before the cents on a check. Turn on British “and” for one hundred and five.
  • The short scale: a billion is a thousand million, as in the US and the UK today.

Which style to pick

Style 1234.56 becomes Use it for
Words One thousand two hundred thirty-four point five six Numbers in documents and sentences
Check amount One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 Writing a check
Money One thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents Invoices, contracts, receipts
Ordinal (for 21) Twenty-first Dates, places in a list, floors

Money also does euros and cents, and pounds and pence. Amounts with more than two decimals are rounded to the nearest cent, and the note under the result says so.

Writing a check

  1. In the small box, write the amount in figures: 1,234.56.
  2. On the long line, start at the far left and write the words from Check amount: One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100.
  3. Draw a line from the end of the words to the word Dollars, so nobody can add to it.
  4. For a whole-dollar amount, write and 00/100 (some people write and no/100).

If the words and the figures don’t match, US banks go by the words, so copy them carefully.

Questions

How do you write a number in words?

Write each group of three digits, then its name: 1,234,567 is one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven. Put a hyphen in the numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine. American English leaves out "and"; British English says one hundred and five.

How do I write a check amount in words?

Write the dollars in words and the cents as a fraction over 100: $1,234.56 is One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100. Start at the far left of the line and draw a line through the space after it, so nothing can be added. Most checks print the word Dollars at the end of the line.

Do you use "and" when writing numbers in words?

In American English, only before the cents or a fraction: one hundred five, but one hundred five and 50/100. British English also puts "and" after hundred: one hundred and five. Turn on British "and" under Options for that style.

How do you write 1,000,000 in words?

One million. Every three zeros adds a new name: thousand (1,000), million (1,000,000), billion (1,000,000,000) and trillion (1,000,000,000,000). This tool uses the short scale used in the US and the UK, where a billion is a thousand million.

How do you write decimals in words?

Say the whole number, then "point", then each digit: 3.14 is three point one four. For money, use Money (three dollars and fourteen cents) or Check amount (Three and 14/100) instead.

How do you write ordinal numbers in words?

Change only the last word. One becomes first, two second, three third, five fifth, eight eighth, nine ninth and twelve twelfth; words ending in y change to ieth (twenty to twentieth); every other word adds th. So 21st is twenty-first and 100th is one hundredth.
