How to use Alphabetizer

  1. Paste your list with one item per line. Columns copied from Excel or Google Sheets work.
  2. Pick an order: A to Z, Z to A, shortest first or longest first.
  3. For a list on one line, like "pear, apple, fig", set Items are separated by to Commas.
  4. Turn on Sort by last name for names, or Ignore The, A and An for titles.
  5. Copy the sorted list, or download it as a .txt file.

Examples

A list with mixed capitals

Settings
  • Sort: A to Z
Input

Capitals don’t change the order: Dates still comes after cherries.

Numbers in natural order

Settings
  • Sort: A to Z
Input
Room 10
Room 2
Room 1
Room 21
Result
Room 1
Room 2

Room 2 comes before Room 10, the way people count, not digit by digit.

Names by last name

Settings
  • Sort: A to Z
  • Sort by last name: On
Input
Maria Lopez
James Smith
Anna Brown
David Lee
Result
Anna Brown
David Lee

Each name is sorted by its last word and keeps its first name.

Book titles, library style

Settings
  • Sort: A to Z
  • Ignore The, A and An: On
Input
The Hobbit
A Tale of Two Cities
Dune
An American Tragedy
Result
An American Tragedy
Dune
The Hobbit
A Tale of Two Cities

The Hobbit sorts under H and A Tale of Two Cities under T.

A comma-separated list

Settings
  • Sort: A to Z
  • Items are separated by: Commas
Input
pear, apple, fig, banana
Result
apple, banana, fig, pear

The result is a comma-separated list too.

How it works

Each line of your list is one item, and the list is sorted as you type. Everything runs in your browser, so names and email addresses stay private.

Sort What you get
A to Z Alphabetical order
Z to A Reverse alphabetical order
Shortest first Shortest items first, and items of the same length A to Z
Longest first Longest items first, and items of the same length A to Z

How the order is decided

  • Capitals don’t count. “apple”, “Banana” and “cherry” sort as a, b, c. When two items differ only in capitals, they keep the order they were in.
  • Numbers are in natural order. “Room 2” comes before “Room 10”, and 9 before 100. A plain character-by-character sort would put “Room 10” first because 1 comes before 2.
  • A list of numbers sorts by value. A to Z puts the smallest first: -2, 0.5, 3.25, 3.5, 10, 1,000. Numbers come before words in a mixed list.
  • Accented letters sort with their base letter. “éclair” sits with the e’s, not after z.
  • Empty lines are dropped, so a blank line in your list doesn’t end up at the top.

Lists on one line

Set Items are separated by to Commas for a list like “pear, apple, fig”. The result is a comma-separated list too. Choose Spaces (sort words) to put the words of a sentence or a tag list in order.

Names and titles

  • Sort by last name sorts each line by its last word, so “Anna Brown” comes before “David Lee”. The names stay written first name first.
  • Ignore The, A and An sorts “The Hobbit” under H and “A Tale of Two Cities” under T, the way libraries and record stores do. Without it, every word counts, so “The Hobbit” sorts under T.

Duplicates

Remove duplicates keeps one copy of items that are exactly the same, ignoring extra spaces. To treat “Apple” and “apple” as the same item, or to see which items repeat, use Remove Duplicate Lines. To see what two lists have in common, use Compare Two Lists.
