List Randomizer
Shuffle any list into a random order, or pick random names, numbers or winners from it.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded.
One item per line, or separated by commas.
Shuffle your list into a random order
Paste or type a list, one item per line.
Every order and every pick is equally likely. Your list stays in this browser and is never uploaded.
How to use List Randomizer
- Paste your list, one item per line. A single line with commas, like "Ann, Ben, Cara", works too.
- Choose Shuffle the list to put every item in a random order, or Pick at random to draw one or more.
- For a draw, set how many to pick. Each item can be picked only once per draw.
- Press Shuffle list or Pick one. Press again for a new result.
- Copy the result. Turn on Number the result to copy it as a numbered list.
How it works
The randomizer reads one item per line, skipping blank lines and trimming spaces. If you paste a single line with commas or semicolons, it splits there instead. Then:
| Choose | What you get |
|---|---|
| Shuffle the list | Every item in a new random order |
| Pick at random | One or more items drawn from the list, each at most once per draw |
The randomness comes from your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, and the shuffle is Fisher–Yates, the standard method that gives every possible order the same chance. Nothing is sent anywhere, and your list is saved only in this browser so it’s there next time.
Good to know
- Duplicates: a name on the list twice has two chances. Turn on Remove duplicates to count each item once; it ignores capital letters and extra spaces when comparing.
- Drawing several: set How many. The order of the picks is the order they were drawn, so the first one can be the first prize.
- Every press is new: previous results don’t affect the next one. The same item can come out on top twice in a row; that’s what fair looks like.
- Big lists: up to 100,000 items.
Ideas
- A random order for presentations, turns or a reading list.
- Picking a student, a team captain or who goes first.
- Drawing giveaway winners from a list of entries.
- Splitting chores or tasks: shuffle, then take them in order.
Questions
How do I randomize a list?
Paste it above with one item per line and press Shuffle list. Every item ends up in a new random position, and each press gives a new order. Turn on Number the result if you need a running order, like for presentations.
How do I pick a random name from a list?
Paste the names, choose Pick at random and press Pick one. To draw several, set How many: each name can come up only once per draw. Turn on Remove duplicates if someone is on the list twice by mistake.
Is the random picker really random?
It uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, the one used for passwords and encryption keys, with the Fisher–Yates shuffle. Every order and every pick is equally likely, and nobody, including us, can influence the result.
How do I pick a giveaway winner fairly?
Put one entry per line, decide beforehand whether duplicate entries count, and pick in front of your audience or record your screen while you do. Announce how many winners you will draw before you press Pick.
How do I randomize a list in Excel or Google Sheets?
In Excel 365, =SORTBY(A2:A20, RANDARRAY(ROWS(A2:A20))) returns the list in random order. In Google Sheets, select the list and use Data → Randomize range. Both change again when the sheet recalculates, so paste the result as values to keep it.
