How to use Morse Code Translator
- Type text or paste Morse code. Detect works out which way to translate: dots and dashes become text, anything else becomes Morse.
- Write Morse with a space between letters and a / between words. Dots and dashes like • and — work too.
- Press Play Morse to hear it. Choose the speed in words per minute and the tone.
- Turn on Flash light to see each dot and dash blink, or download the sound as a .wav file.
- Copy the translation, or download it as a .txt file.
Examples
SOS
- Translate: Detect
SOS
... --- ...
Three dots, three dashes, three dots. Sent as a distress call, it is run together with no gaps: ...---...
A sentence
- Translate: Detect
Hello world
.... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..
A space separates letters and a / separates words.
Morse back to text
- Translate: Detect
.. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..-
I LOVE YOU
Morse has no small and capital letters, so the text comes out in capitals.
Numbers and punctuation
- Translate: Detect
Call 911!
-.-. .- .-.. .-.. / ----. .---- .---- -.-.--
Every digit has five dots and dashes. The exclamation mark (-.-.--) is widely used but not in the ITU standard.
How it works
Morse code writes each letter, digit and punctuation mark as a short pattern of dots and dashes. The translator uses International Morse code (the ITU standard) and a few common extras like ! and &.
Detect works out the direction: input made only of dots, dashes, spaces and slashes is read as Morse, and anything else becomes Morse. Choose Text → Morse or Morse → text to force one way.
Everything runs in your browser, including the sound. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Writing Morse code
- Letters are separated by one space:
... --- ...is SOS. - Words are separated by a slash:
.... .. / - .... . .-. .is HI THERE. A vertical bar or two spaces work too. - Dots and dashes can be typed as
.and-, or pasted as•,·,—,–or_. - Line breaks stay line breaks, so you can translate a list or a poem line by line.
- Capital and small letters are the same in Morse, so translated text comes out in capitals.
- Accented letters without their own code are sent as the plain letter (ñ as N). É has its own code,
..-...
If a part of the Morse isn’t a letter, it shows as in the text. That usually means a space is missing between two letters.
Playing it as sound and light
Press Play Morse to hear the Morse on the screen, whichever side it is on. Speed is in words per minute (WPM), measured with the word PARIS:
| Part | Length |
|---|---|
| Dot | 1 unit |
| Dash | 3 units |
| Gap inside a letter | 1 unit |
| Gap between letters | 3 units |
| Gap between words | 7 units |
At 20 WPM, the usual speed for tests and practice, one unit is 60 milliseconds. Learners often start at 5 to 13 WPM. Choose a tone between 400 and 1000 Hz: 600 Hz is easy on the ears.
Flash light blinks a small light with each dot and dash, for practicing reading Morse by sight. It flashes quickly at higher speeds, so leave it off if flashing light affects you. The .wav button saves the sound as an audio file you can play anywhere.

Questions
What is SOS in Morse code?
SOS is three dots, three dashes and three dots: ... --- ... As a distress signal it is sent as one unbroken sequence (...---...), not as three separate letters.
How do you say "I love you" in Morse code?
"I love you" is .. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..- with a space between letters and a slash between words.
How do you read Morse code?
Split the code at the spaces into letters and at the slashes into words, then look each letter up in the alphabet table on this page. By ear, a dot is a short beep, a dash is three times longer, and the gaps tell you where letters and words end.
How fast is Morse code?
Speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), using the word PARIS as the standard word. At 20 WPM a dot lasts 60 milliseconds. Beginners often learn at 5 to 13 WPM, and experienced operators send 20 to 30 WPM or more.
How are spaces written in Morse code?
In written Morse, put one space between letters and a slash (/) between words. In sound, the gap inside a letter lasts one dot, the gap between letters three dots, and the gap between words seven dots.
