Remove Line Breaks

Join text that breaks mid-sentence back into clean paragraphs.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use Remove Line Breaks

  1. Paste your text into the box. Text from PDFs, emails, websites and chat apps all works.
  2. Choose what replaces each line break: a space, nothing, or your own text such as a comma.
  3. Leave "Keep paragraph breaks" on if blank lines should stay as breaks between paragraphs.
  4. Turn on "Rejoin hyphenated words" for PDF text where words are split at the end of a line.
  5. Copy the clean text, or download it as a .txt file.

Paragraphs stay apart. Short lines inside one paragraph, like "Thanks," and "Sam", are joined too; put a blank line between them to keep them apart.

How it works

Every kind of line break counts. Windows ends lines with two characters (CR LF), older Macs used CR, and everything else uses LF. Text from Word and some websites can also contain Unicode line separators. The tool treats all of them as the same line break, so text from any source cleans up the same way.

A paragraph break is one or more blank lines. A line that contains only spaces or tabs counts as blank. With Keep paragraph breaks on, each run of blank lines becomes exactly one blank line, and only the breaks inside each paragraph are removed. With it off, the whole text becomes one line.

Rejoining hyphenated words is a best guess. When a line ends in a hyphen and the next line starts with a lowercase letter, the tool assumes a word was split (deliv- + ery becomes delivery). When the next line starts with a capital letter or a number, it keeps the hyphen and removes only the break (COVID- + 19 becomes COVID-19). The guess is wrong for compound words that happen to break at the hyphen, such as well- + known, which is why the option is off by default.

Extra spaces. With Remove extra spaces on, spaces and tabs at the start and end of each line are trimmed and runs of spaces become one. Non-breaking spaces are left alone, because they usually hold things together on purpose, like 10 kg. Turn the option off to keep spacing exactly as pasted.

Nothing leaves your device. The text is processed in your browser as you type. Very long texts (over 20,000 characters) update after a short pause instead of on every keystroke.

Questions

Why does text copied from a PDF have line breaks?

A PDF stores text as lines placed on a page, not as flowing paragraphs. When you copy it, each visual line usually ends with a real line break, so sentences break wherever the original page did.

How do I remove line breaks in Microsoft Word?

Open Find and Replace (Ctrl+H), search for ^p for paragraph marks or ^l for manual line breaks, and replace them with a space. To keep real paragraphs, first replace ^p^p with a placeholder such as ###, replace the remaining ^p with a space, then turn ### back into ^p^p.

How do I remove line breaks in Excel?

Use =SUBSTITUTE(A1,CHAR(10)," ") to replace line breaks in cell A1 with a space. =CLEAN(A1) also removes them, but it joins the words without a space.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to QuickFixBase or anyone else, and it is gone when you close the page.
