How to Scan a QR Code When You’re Already on Your Phone

Tested fix · Updated October 10, 2026

You’re scrolling through Instagram, or someone sends you a photo with a QR code in it — and you think, wait. I’m already on my phone. How am I supposed to scan this?

It’s one of those things that genuinely shouldn’t be confusing — and yet. The good news: there’s a simple fix, and once you know it, you’ll never be stuck again.

The Problem

QR codes are designed to be scanned with a camera. But when the QR code is on your phone screen — in a message, a screenshot, or a photo someone sent you — your camera is useless. You can’t point your phone at itself.

This happened to me when someone sent me a photo of a restaurant menu QR code. Just sitting there in my messages, completely useless to me. After a bit of searching I found the answer — and honestly, I felt a bit silly for not knowing it sooner.

The Fix: Scan It From Your Photos

Most modern smartphones can scan a QR code straight from an image in your gallery. No extra app needed — it’s already built in.

Here’s how:

On iPhone:

  1. Save the image to your Photos
  2. Open the image in the Photos app
  3. Long press on the QR code
  4. Tap Open in Safari (or the link that appears)

On Android:

  1. Save the image to your gallery (if it’s not already there)
  2. Open the image in your Google Photos app
  3. Tap Google Lens: either the Lens button at the bottom of the screen or, on newer versions, More (⋮) → Google Lens
  4. Lens finds the QR code and shows the link — tap it

Even faster on Android: Circle to Search. On most recent Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones, you don’t need to save anything. With the QR code on screen, long press the home button or the navigation bar, and Circle to Search reads the code and shows the link.

Other Ways to Do It

If the steps above don’t work for you, here are two more options:

Screenshot + Scan
Take a screenshot of whatever screen has the QR code on it. Then follow the same steps above — open the screenshot in your gallery and scan it from there.

Use Google Lens
Google Lens is probably the most reliable option across both Android and iPhone. On Android it’s built into the Google app and Google Photos. On iPhone there’s no separate Lens app: install the free Google app and tap the camera icon in its search bar.

  1. Open Google Lens
  2. Tap the image icon to choose a photo from your gallery
  3. Point the selection at the QR code
  4. It’ll scan it instantly and show you the link

Google Lens works on screenshots, photos sent to you, images saved from Instagram — basically anything in your gallery.

Quick Summary

Method Works on
Long press the QR code in Photos iPhone
Google Photos → Lens Android
Circle to Search Most recent Android phones
Google app → Lens → choose from gallery iPhone + Android
Screenshot first, then any of the above iPhone + Android

Why Doesn’t Everyone Know This?

Here’s the thing — QR codes were originally designed to be scanned with a separate device. The idea that you’d need to scan one on the device you’re already using is relatively new — and phone makers quietly added the feature without making a big deal of it.

So if you didn’t know this existed, you’re in very good company.

Final Thoughts

The easiest method: save the image, open it in your gallery, and scan it from there (long press on iPhone, Lens on Android). That’s it. Works on most phones without any extra apps.

If your phone is older or nothing happens, grab Google Lens — it handles this reliably.
